Finding your perfect photographer

A guide to finding the best fit for your needs

Choosing a photographer can feel daunting—I know! There are so many to choose from, so where do you even begin? Fear no longer; as a photographer myself, here’s my guide to help you find the perfect match for your photography needs.

Define Your Needs and Style

Before beginning your search, identify what you’re looking for in a photographer. Different photographers specialize in various genres, such as:

  • Weddings: Candid and emotional storytelling.

  • Portraits: Studio or outdoor settings focusing on individuals or groups.

  • Lifestyle: Natural, real-life moments.

  • Commercial: High-quality images for businesses and products.

Consider the style of photography that resonates with you. Browse online portfolios and create a mood board to visualize what you want—whether it’s vibrant and dynamic or soft and romantic.

Set a Budget

Photography services can range widely in price, so establish a clear budget. While it’s tempting to opt for the most affordable option, remember that quality often correlates with cost. Prioritize photographers whose work aligns with your vision and whose pricing fits within your means. Also, always ask if they do payment plans! Never feel ashamed for needing to break up a heafty payment! Those final images will be worth the cost in the end!

Research and Shortlist

Start your search by asking for recommendations from friends and family. Social media platforms, photography directories, and local listings are also excellent resources. Look for photographers with:

  • A strong portfolio showcasing consistency and quality.

  • Positive reviews and testimonials.

  • Experience in the type of photography you need.

  • Someone with a consistent style.

The Do's and Don'ts of Finding a Photographer

The Do's:

  • Do clarify your vision: Clearly communicate your expectations and preferences to the photographer.

  • Do ask questions: Never feel ashamed for asking a million questions; this is what we are here for! Whether it is questions about the session to styling questions, the key to an amazing experience is vulnerability with any concerns!

  • Do ask about timeline: How long does it take to edit images (their turn-around-time) & does that align with when you need your images? How far in advance do they book out?

  • Are you looking for a hobbyist or professional? (A separate blog post is to come regarding the difference!)

The Don'ts:

  • Don’t base your decision solely on price: While budget is important, low prices may compromise quality (and PLEASE do not say you’re looking for someone who doesn’t cost an arm and a leg!)

  • Don’t skip the portfolio review: Make sure the photographer’s style aligns with your vision- check out their last 6 months of work!

  • Don’t ignore contracts: Always review and understand the terms before committing.

  • Don’t procrastinate: Popular photographers get booked quickly, so start your search early.

  • Don’t overlook communication: Poor communication can lead to unmet expectations and frustration.

Review Contracts Carefully

Once you’ve chosen a photographer, review their contract thoroughly. Ensure it includes:

  • Pricing and payment schedule.

  • Details of the service, such as duration, number of images, and editing.

  • Delivery timeline.

  • Cancellation or rescheduling policies.

A clear contract protects both parties and sets expectations for the project.

Trust Your Instincts

Finally, trust your instincts. Beyond skills and style, the right photographer will make you feel comfortable and confident. This trust will shine through in the final images, creating memories you’ll cherish forever.
